Cala Formentor or Cala Pi de sa Posada is an inlet in the interior of which is located Cala Gentil, as well as Platja de Formentor, the famous hotel with the same name and in front of its coast the Illa de Formentor. The nearest village is Port de Pollença, at 14 kilometres.
Platja de Palma
Platja de Palma is the biggest piece of coast of the capital of the Balearic archipelago (4,6 kilometres long, divided into 15 beaches), situated 14 kilometres east from this town, although the last part belongs to the municipality of Llucmajor.
The name of Platja de Palma was established by sociedad Mar de Mallorca, which used to exploit the beach (sun loungers, umbrellas, bars and refreshment stalls), to unify by one name Cala Estància, Can Pastilla and s'Arenal.
The coast has fine-grained sand and gentle slope, which makes bathing easier for small children. The nearest port facilities are located at Club Nàutic s'Arenal, at 2,5 nautical miles toward west.
The natural vegetation of the dunes ecosystem which retains the sand was destructed and nearly disappeared in 1989. therefore 400.000 tons of sand where introduced to give the beach the spectacular present dimensions.
Parallel to the coast there is the biggest concentration of hotels in Majorca and one of the most importants in the Mediterranean area. Between 1960 and 1968 the biggest part of these hotels were built and at the end of the 20th century the coastline was redesigned, with palms along a new promenade and road traffic was limited.
This beach is the best example for mass tourism at Majorca, with a very high occupancy and the gathering of thousands of tourists and residents. The accessibility by car is easy. There is no parking area for private cars next to the coast. This is why we recommend the public transport, the nearest bus stop is located at 50 metres.
Cala Pi is named by the surrounding pine trees and the torrent that flows into its water. It is situated 17 kilometres from Llucmajor and four from the talayotic village of Capocorb, declared Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional in 1931, which can be visited after paying a ticket.
This beach goes into the interior for half a kilometre between two vertical walls of more than 30 metres, and the visitor is received by a defence tower of the 16th century. The sand is fine, with only little slope, where we sometimes can find seaweed, and in the surroundings there is a residential area.
The navigators must know that this sandy area is the most sheltered of this area of the majorcan coast, open to south and southeast, when the wind blows from south it is difficult to exit, and near the entrance there are three stones on port side. This is why the boats should enter from the central part to anchor, if they come early and if they are not too big, because there is a depth of from two and five metres on a sandy ground. The nearest port, Club Nàutic s'Estanyol de Migjorn, is situated at four and a half nautical miles.
The accessibility by car is easy and there is a free parking area for private cars. The bus stop is very close. You will have to go down some steep stairs to reach Cala Pi. The influx of local and tourist visitors is not very massive.
