Must see in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria welcomed its first tourists towards the end of the 19th century, when people travelled over from the
United Kingdom to the island, seduced by the generosity of its climate and the incredible curative properties of its waters. The period of transformation society underwent during the Second Industrial Revolution in Europe made
the most thoughtful individuals search for a solution to the problems derived from the pollution and the economic
and demographic changes that were happening. With heart and lung desease rife at this time, people’s skin and
bones found cures in the now extinct spas of Azuaje and Los Berrazales, highy popular at the time.
Those incipient health expeditions planted the seed of an activity taken on board by Eduardo Filiputti, the creator
of a heliotherapy centre in the 1960s right next to the Maspalomas Dunes, considered the precursor to today’s extensive range of establishments specializing in body care and relaxation that exist in Gran Canaria.
The island now has Spa and Wellness centres managed by professionals who specialize in wellbeing and health and
beauty. Treatments with seaweed, sea mud, hydrotherapy, salt baths, aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, massages and
Turkish baths are just a few of the alternative therapies available to visitors to relieve aches and pains, stress and boredom.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands. It is the capital of the island, and was founded back in 1478. Over the years it has consolidated itself as an important, cosmopolitan Atlantic location. Since Christopher Columbus first came here several centuries ago for the first of three visits on his way to America, travellers from all origins have been seduced by its charms.
With a historical and colonial town centre, made up of Vegueta and Triana, and with one of the finest urban
beaches in the world at Las Canteras, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also a leading tourist, historical, astronomic, shopping hotspot, with delightful museums and a fine range of cultural and entertainment offerings, the highlight being its well known Carnival.
San Agustín beach
In south Gran Canaria is within the resort of the same name with everything you need on holiday, such as a wide range of accommodation and services, but is calm and doesn’t get the typical resort crowds. San Agustín beach is perfect for a relaxing holiday in the sunshine and is also home to one of the islands biggest thalassotherapy centres.
A volcanic sand beach close to Playa del Inglés
An urban stretch of dark, golden sand over 600 metres long with calm water and weak currents, San Agustín beach’s gentle waves are perfect for keeping the kids entertained. Along the coastal walkway you find plenty of outdoor cafés, restaurants and bars. Loungers and parasols are available for rent, along with other services such as showers, lifeguards, free parking and good bus links to Maspalomas.
