Interesting places in Canary Islands
The coastline along Gran Canaria is one of the preferred hotspots for tourists who choose to come to the island. The average yearly temperature of 24 degrees guarantees a long lasting experience at any of the beaches along the coast, most of which are easily accessible and apt for bathing. There are choices to suit all tastes. Tourists can choose from long stretches of golden sands, to tiny coves sheltered in the shadow of steeping cliffs, and areas reserved for nudists.
Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, at the natural area of Las Dunas, are the best known spots due to their wide range
of accommodation and leisure and entertainment. Las Canteras is one of the finest urban beaches in Spain and
the pride of the residents of the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. One of the most delightful nightfalls to be
had on the island is at Agaete, while the coast of Mogán is another ideal area to enjoy the sea thanks to the stability of the climate, famous around Europe for having over 330 sunny days a year.
Güi Güi beach
If you’re in Gran Canaria and moderately fit, the hike to Güi Güi beach is a fantastic trek with a happy ending: A swim in the normally tranquil Atlantic Ocean with views of Teide volcano on the horizon. Legendary Güi Güi isn’t just famous for its beach but for the journey needed to arrive: A two and a half hour hike, with some difficult stretches, through pristine nature with clean air and no crowds.
Swimming at La Aldea with valleys and mountains behind
Access to this west coast beach at La Aldea is via Tasartico hamlet although you can also get to Güi Güi by boat from Mogán or from the harbour at La Aldea. The reward is a refreshing swim in cool, crystal clear waters. Güi Güi beach is at its sandiest during the summer months when the areas fine sand settles.
The hamlet of Taganana is the main population centre in the Anaga Rural Park. Situated in the southern part of this hugely important nature reserve, in the north-east of Tenerife, Taganana benefits from a beautiful surrounding landscape and gives a true flavour of Tenerife’s oldest villages. In fact, this was one of the first settlements founded by the Spanish conquerors. There are a number of items of great historical value, and two churches – Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Santa Catalina chapel – are listed buildings.
Cultural and historical jewels
The best way to reach Taganana is from the north via the Las Mercedes forest – one of the oldest in Europe – along the windy road that goes down between the ravines. In the centre of the village you’ll find the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves square, a quiet space where the locals take time out under the Indian laurel trees. The ethnographic value of Taganana has many facets, including the local stone presses and the famous Portugal neighbourhood, an authentic historical jewel.
