Must see in Tenerife
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Located in the north-east of the island of Tenerife, the capital bears the marks of the passing of time and a history spanning more than five centuries. Founded on May 3, 1494 by the Castilian, Alonso Fernández de Lugo, it soon became a key port on the trade route between Europe and the Americas. Lined with churches and historic buildings, the plazas Principe, Weyler, San Francisco and Candelaria are picturesque spots to visit.
Tenerife’s most important bay, with churches, markets and historic streets
The bay of Santa Cruz de Tenerife reflects its maritime past with historical buildings such as the Concepción Church and the Palacio de Carta. Dating from the early 20th Century is the García Sanabria Park, which borders the Toscal neighbourhood. The market of Nuestra Señora de África with its graceful colonial ambience, attracts visitors every Sunday, keen to explore its popular antiques market. Traditional bars and eateries can be found in the popular Calle de la Noria, which is also home to the headquarters of some of Tenerife’s most important groups of carnival street musicians.
You will find Playa Jardín beach in the tourist town of Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife. This is one of the most famous beaches in the region, and was designed in the 1990s by the famous Canarian artist, César Manrique, created to guarantee rest and relaxation for its visitors. Even just getting to the beach, via gardens full of local plants with pathways that take you between stone walls and waterfalls is the perfect way to start a thoroughly relaxing day on a beach that offers all the services you need and incredible views of Mount Teide.
Three urban coves with black sand in Puerto de la Cruz
Playa Jardín beach is an urban black sand beach divided into three sections, Castillo beach, Charcón beach and Punta Brava beach. There is a lateral breakwater to protect bathers from high waves but there are still open areas for those wanting to surf. The promenade connects the beach with gardens, children’s playgrounds, terraces and cafeterias and a stage where concerts frequently take place. Additionally there is sunbed and parasol hire, showers, changing rooms and access for those with reduced mobility.
Located in the north of the island of Tenerife, San Cristobal de La Laguna was the first city established in the Canary Islands and to date is the only one to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its colonial architecture, the linear layout of its streets – created in the 15th Century without protective outer walls – and a large pedestrianised shopping area, all combine to give a distinctive feel to this ancient university city, whose historic streets offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
Family walks amongst palaces, churches and convents
What most stands out among La Laguna’s old town is the large number of churches and other historic religious buildings, which offer visitors the chance to enjoy its historical and artistic sites, combined with a stop-off in some of its many tapas bars. Among the buildings open to the public are the neoclassical cathedral, La Iglesia del Cristo, the palaces of Nava and Salazar and the convents of Santa Catalina and of Santa Clara. La Laguna is well worth a visit.
